Therein lies the difference between you and I. I love your interpretation, yet I have an unfortunate penchant for bleakness. I do enjoy that her decisions can be cast in entirely different lights depending on the perspective. Her choices are personal gratification vs. social gratification, or selfishness vs. utilitarianism, or even want vs. need. I suppose Senshi are like the guardians in Plato’s Republic: they are appointed to their posts because they are best suited for the job, and their happiness does not come from satisfaction with the employment, but from living a just life that tempers unsophisticated wants with hard work and contribution to a balanced society. She might very well know it is in her best interest to stay with the other Senshi and that she can find fulfillment there, but it might not necessarily be what she wants. And the idea that Ami knows exactly what she wants to do, but stays because she needs to perform her planetary guardian schtick is too painful for me to just leave out there in the cold without adopting it as my own.
