The fandom mocks Mamoru’s fashion sense but you know who has the real terrible fashion sense? THE SAILOR STARLIGHTS! Their workout outfits, their date outfits, Seiya’s tuxedo and their sailor form etc.

This is a very fair assessment. In their defense they are literally ALIENS, but that is barely an excuse. Presenting: Three Lights/Starlights Fashion Highlights

Do you know how many bottles of red pigment dyed to make this outfit?

The complete “casually Google searching for your lost princess at home” collection: suspenders, penny loafers, bright purple harem pants, and literally just a tablecloth wrapped around your body

Each of these outfits has multiple layers, and it works on none of them.

Even in Minako’s imagination, they don’t have enough dignity to resist the magnetic pull of these sparkly epaulets and bellbottom slacks.

And, my personal favorite:

SOS (Save Our Shirts)

Maybe their band wasn’t much to talk about but their careers as style icons were FLOURISHING in 1997.

You ever notice how in ep 188 Makoto shows no signs of aerophobia.

… Anon, I won’t tolerate that kind of heartbreak under my roof.

Go to your room and think about what you’ve done.

You may come out when I’ve finished hand-stitching my emotional stability back together again.

And no dessert.

“The Three Lights wrote a song that isn’t “Search For Your Love”? The…”

Their other song for the anime, Todokanu Omoi, plays in episode 188 when the senshi transform. That’s the airplane episode. 🙂 I’m so used to that song on the Sailormoon theme album that I forget that it was barely in the anime at all.

Oh yeah! I wasn’t even thinking about background music. Three Lights, I apologize, you may keep your status as a ‘verifiable pop band’ for one day more.

Hi :) I saw Your post about Siren and I wanted to tell you that in Polish “syrena” means mermaid and it sounds alike so maybe in some more popular language it’s the same and that’s the reason of that drawing :)

Awesome! I love finding little linguistic connections. If I recall correctly, sirens are also mythologically connected to mermaids or sea people (like the ones in Homer’s Odyssey). Not sure if this ties in to Japanese culture at all, but great observation!

you can tell they’re transforming from male to female because first they’re blue and then they’re pink

of course

You may not like it, but the writers and animators had, what, like twenty seconds to work with here? They had to use some kind of shorthand. I find it more offensive that boob/butt shots were decided on as a way to emphasize the transition. Not all women have large breasts. Many women have flat butts. No women are meat for male consumption.

But on the whole, I choose to be more impressed that three trans characters were allowed to be heroes in a country where transgenderism is still viewed in an even more negative light than it is in the US. Pick your battles. Realize what’s happening here is not a bad thing.

Oh, don’t worry, I’m not advocating for some kind of overtly visual proof of transition. I love the concept of trans characters being celebrated just as much as women, and I love that they personalities and poses don’t change just because their gender does. It’s just the association of blue is always masculine and pink is always feminine that bugs me slightly, and I’m aware it’s a quite petty concern to harbor. They can’t break every stereotype, after all, and I can respect that.  I really appreciate your comments!

I think that’s kind of a nonissue in Sailor Moon, though. Mercury and Neptune both transform in blue. Pluto transforms in blue and black. Uranus, if I recall correctly, has a yellow transformation but a blue background. Jupiter transforms in green thunder. That leaves only the Moons (Usagi pink and blue, Chibs pink), Mars (red), and Venus (orange and yellow), since Saturn has no transformation. The “stereotypical” colors are far outstripped by not sticking to the binary, or going outside it altogether to relate the transformation to the element.

So yes, it’s used here as a shorthand, simply because it’s fast and familiar and easy to animate. But it’s by no means the show’s norm.

I agree completely! This show does an incredible job of demonstrating the vast variety of forms femininity can take, and how powerful it is regardless of its presentation.

“In particular, please do not leave your emotional baggage unattended. The rest of us have enough of our own to deal with. Thank you.”

Due to extenuating circumstances, I refuse to acknowledge that the last three minutes of this episode happened.
