“Usagi-chan is a girl who gave all of us something incomparable…”

“You don’t get it at all… If we had not met Usagi, we would all be alone right now!”

“She’s someone who is very important to us…”

“Please don’t take her away from us…”

i feel personally victimized by this

Well Sailor Pluto is Pluto’s guardian senshi. Venus is Venus’ guardian senshi etc and as well and the planet’s princess. Like Sailor Moon, is the moon’s guardian princess, and the most important one since they all have to protect her. And there are asteroid senshi: Remember the Amazoness Quartet? In the manga they are actually sailor senshi, to protect Chibiusa in the future, they have been woken from their sleep and brainwashed. Oh and when I say planet, I mean that in that in a broad sense

(Don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler! I already knew the Amazonesses were senshi; they built up the parallelism between themselves and the inners quite obviously.)

I’m still not entirely sure why the guardians of other planets are charged with protecting the protector of the moon. Regardless, I think it’s oddly cute that even the smallest interstellar dust particle floating out in the Kuiper Belt might have someone looking out for it.

Without getting too deep into the manga-verse, which I know you haven’t read yet so I won’t spoil it, I think the roles of the guardian senshi were likely determined by Queen Serenity in the Silver Millennium.  Sailor Moon didn’t exist in the past, as far as we know: she was just a princess, and she didn’t yet have her own Silver Crystal.  Queen Serenity probably thought that being the future ruler of the entire solar system would make her a target.

It is funny to put it in perspective, though: half of the most powerful elite magical soldiers at Queen Serenity’s disposal were tasked with being her daughter’s personal guard.  Uranus and Neptune, good luck watching over the other 99% of the solar system by yourselves.

“It is time to announce the assignments for the senshi of the solar system. Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, the four of you shall be my daughter’s personal bodyguards, advisors, confidantes, and Best Friends. Uranus, Neptune, you can guard… the rest.”

“What about me?”

“Oh, Pluto, you’re here too. No, of course I didn’t forget about you. I have a super special assignment for you. You… uh… you get to… stand next to this door. No, that’s all. Just guard the door.”

Did anyone tried to explain what a Star Seed is? There’s problably someone better than me, but I’ll try. “Star Seeds” are the crystals, everybody has them, but just one for each planet is strong enough to be called a star seed, and this person is the sailor senshi for this planet. Or in Earth’s case, Mamoru, he has the golden Crystal or golden star seed (you see in the anime with helios), Usagi’s the Silver crystal. In the manga we see each sailor’s crystal and so they are all princess

Awesome, thank you! I assume this also means that every planet/dwarf planet (sorry Pluto) has its own guardian? When new planets are formed, is a new senshi appointed? What happens if a planet is incinerated in a supernova— oh no that’s going into Sad Territory.

It also makes me wonder if every single infinitesimal asteroid has its own guardian. I was going to protest with the common objection, “but the moon isn’t a planet,” until I remembered from my one semester of natural science that, according the the giant impact hypothesis, the moon and the earth were once one large planet until it was struck by a massive celestial body. The moon formed out of the debris that was trapped in a gravitational orbit around what would eventually become the earth. You might say that even though outside forces tried to split them apart, they still found a way to be together in the end.

All this theoretical astronomy is giving me feelings.

The 90′s anime doesn’t really explain the star seeds well. IIRC according to the anime all creation has star seeds, from humans and animals up to celestial bodies. However, the only difference between Senshi and other beings is that Senshi have “True” star seeds that allow them to transform. There is also no explanation as to why normal people turn into monsters when their star seeds are taken (but it was probably only because they needed a MOTD to fight)

However, the manga goes into the explanation of star seeds in depth. There are additional plot elements that were cut out from the 90′s anime and a more clear distinction between star seeds and things called “Sailor Crystals.” I won’t go too far into it for the sake of spoilers, but I will say that in the manga all creation developed from star seeds, including planets, and some star seeds would develop into a Sailor Crystal as the planet developed. Not all celestial bodies will have a sailor crystal associated with them, but they all came from star seeds.

Thanks! This makes at least few iotas of sense. I imagine this kind of expository minutiae would be easier to read than to watch!

“THERE’S A REASON SHE NEVER MADE ANOTHER APPEARANCE AFTER NEHELENIA’S DEFEAT” and the reason is? I still fail to see it really, what’s so tragic about it? and what and why and please explain :(

If I recall correctly, Chibiusa tries to leave for the future at the beginning of Stars, but is interrupted by Nehelenia’s Magic Energy Storm Thing™. Everyone goes through six episodes of bad times until Nehelenia is finally defeated. And then… we never see Chibiusa again. She doesn’t get a goodbye sequence, and she’s never shown activating the time portal again. This doesn’t seem to bad on its own, but when you take into account that Chibiusa’s conspicuous disappearance coincides precisely with the moment Mamoru gets on the plane, the implication is that her father’s premature death means she never existed at all. Cue her face disappearing from photographs and her name (almost) disappearing from conversation.

Hope this clarifies things and/or makes things more confusing. Time travel, I curse thy name.
