I am interested to see a Philosophy person’s take on Utena tbh

Honestly? watching a 90s magical girl anime would be the most useful thing I ever do with my bachelor’s in philosophy

I would argue Madoka is less “deconstruction” and more “smash all this shit with a hammer because watching girls suffer is fun to someone.” Just… be careful and critical of Madoka, I would say. It feels a little like reading Lolita sometimes– “this is an artistic achievement but at what cost? The audience is either completely reviled or completely enthralled.”

Super good point! “taking an innocent concept and making it creepy” is one of those tactics often reserved for cheap thrills in horror films; just being gritty and dark for the sake of being gritty and dark isn’t enough. (This view is forefront in my mind because I have been watching Black Mirror recently; if you’re going to be a critique of society, you can’t just show what we’re doing wrong, you have to show how it can be fixed!)

My personal favorite theory my friends and I came up with while watching Utena was that every time the stopwatch gets clicked, Saionji is getting dissed somewhere.

Miki keeps meticulous notes.

I will happily endorse this theory because it is hilarious and I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE CLOCKS MEAN

There is actually another couple of songs the three lights have, but I don’t think any of them show up in the series. Todokanu Omoi is one that all three of them sing, and then all of them each have an image song. Seiya’s song (“Ginga Ichi Mibun Chigai na Kataomoi,” aka a friggin’ mouthful) is far and away one of the best! And also, if you…. want to stray to the dark side to the musicals, the show creators had the same thought that it was stupid to be famous for one song and gave them two. 8|a

That puts my mind at ease a bit. I know that the “Search for your Love” one holds significance because it was in-story written for the princess, but I agree it makes sense to have a few more at least to keep up appearances of being a real band rather than being revealed as interplanetary immigrants with a DREAM in their HEARTS

I’M SO GLAD I SPAWNED THIS ON ACCIDENT

BELIEVE ME NO ONE IS GLADDER THAN I

Hello again, friend! I wanted to let you know that my Seramyu blog is not only live but I’ve actually finished the first musical! It’s over at katieban-kaiteiban! your post about mumbling through lyrics reminded me 8|a

That’s awesome! Always happy to know that there is liveblogging goodness to be had. I’ll get around to watching the musicals… eventually.

(Also as a general reminder, all my follows and likes come from my main account, platypusinplaid!)
