New theory Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card is actually just advertisement of those books, Matryomins, and also cooking. It’s like extreme product placement. “Hey guys, who’s paying for this episode?” “A children’s book about a fix buying gloves” “The episode could be them reading this book to kids” “What about the plot?” “I told you, they read the book” “no, about the clear cards plot” “oh! shit we forgot about that again, put a scene with Eriol saying they can’t tell Sakura what going on again”

When I started Clear Card, the last thing I expected it to be was in-depth cooking tutorials and actual informative lectures about Japanese children’s literature and lesser known musical instruments. This isn’t the content I would normally seek out on my own, but it’s slipped in to something that I was watching anyway. It’s like hiding a vitamin in cat food: the cat doesn’t eat the vitamin on its own merits, but ends up eating it because it’s all just part of the meal. 

Picked up this book because it was referenced in Cardcaptor Sakura. Stayed because surreal stories and poems about birds, trains, and space is my exact aesthetic. Rating: billions of uncharted stars out of ten.

I’ve finally caught up w/ clear card and all wanna say is: 1.Im gonna need 20 eps w/ Meiling&Syaoran’s sisters 2.i feel so 0-0 whenever the characters speak English 3.I bet you Momo true form is that leviathan dragonwhosit from Sakura dreams 4.i feel much concern about Akiho when she’s around Kaito 5.WHY THE SECRETS 6. Momo is if Michiru were the magical mascot 7.I too am miffed they spoiled Momo being alive 8.I will personally pay for Meiling’s flight to England to dropkick Eriol back to Japan

if Momo is the nightmare dragon puppeteering Akiho in the future, I’m going to drop my laptop into the nearest river and start a modest farm with a vegetable garden and a few goats

I still have no idea why Syaoran is holding seances for his girlfriend’s teddy bear

FOR THE DRAMA

Next season of Sakura should be a spin off with Tomoyo as a main character, the plot is just Tomoyo trying to film Sakura, sometimes it’s cards related stuff, sometimes it’s just slice of life. Also Tomoyo is the one behind the Kero explain stuff segments and we get to see the behind the scenes for that. The OPs and EDs are Tomoyo doing the filming of the previous OPs and EDs (There’s already one of that for the first opening of the original)

The thing about clear card is that 90% of the time they forget they have a plot, but somehow whatever they are showing is entertainment enough (at least for me) that I could watch that forever, give me an entire episode about tips for cooking, or about weird musical instruments or children books, but then when we get to the 10% of “plot” and it’s actually “everyone around Sakura Knows Something but won’t tell her” and that’s so much more frustrating than having 100% no plot

This analysis perfectly captures the pacing issues with Cardcaptor Sakura, thank you! I’m perfectly happy with the slice-of-life stuff, but the interpersonal relationships are so engaging by themselves that the actual magical girl plot comes off kind of jarring. It’s like if you were watching Care Bears and every episode ended with a voiceover narration that says “yes, all seems well… but someone is going to murder Cozy Heart Penguin in the next few weeks, and no one knows how or why”

By now I’m just staring suspiciously at Yamazaki and wondering what HE’S hiding. And what Fujitaka’s been up to offscreen. (I mean, hopefully Kero and Yue tell Sakura after they’ve calmed down from ‘shit she’s really powerful’, but as it stands basically every dude in the show is keeping some big secret.)

I can’t believe we let all the other random bullshit distract us from the true question on all our minds, which is

IS YAMAZAKI

He’s not in the new OP with everyone else, and he hasn’t appeared or even been mentioned since Nightmare Zoo. Did he lie to us about his own existence? Was his presence in this reality just another prank? Is he the third most powerful magician that Kero was talking about? Where do the mysteries end?

Couldn’t they just truncated them telling the story to move the plot on instead of taking up the majority of the last half of the ep? I did like Syaorans aggressive organ playing as a way to tell the kids to stfu

I’m really curious about why they decided to make “Buying Mittens” such a big focus! I assumed that it would be an easy 1:1 allegory for something that’s going on in the larger narrative, but I honestly can’t figure it out. The story was wonderful even though I don’t know why it was there. That’s how they keep me watching every single week!
