Is it bad that through one of my first listen throughs of the Planets by Holst I imagined sailor moon characters in a short film like way through each movement??? Like for the Jupiter movement, I just imagined a tiny Princess Jupiter in a carriage looking out, heralded by her subjects. I guess a coronation pretty much.. I forget my other imaginings for the rest, but I switched from imagining space, greek/roman mythology to sailor moon. Haven’t listened to the suite in such a long time.

I also LOVE this reading. I imagine some kind of moon bard, writing these songs to celebrate the lives of the princesses. Time passes, the lyrics have been abandoned to the ages, the ancient moon language long forgotten, but the music retains its timelessness.

Additionally: The world needs more Silver Millennium baby princess Senshi.

Guess who is going to be playing Holst’s The Planets next semester? ME

Guess who is going to needlessly relate it to Sailor Moon? ALSO ME

If you ever have an hour to kill, listen to The Planets suite and talk to me about its relationship to the Sailor Mooniverse. I am listening and I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about celestial bodies and orchestral music and soldiers of justice.

AMV material?

Yoooooo,

I was at the symphony 2 weeks ago watching this live, and I was trying to fit the movements to the characters, and what I eventually decided is that the each movement tells such a cinematic story that I can’t isolate the movements enough to just focus on one person. So I moved outwards to look at the big picture and…

when you correlate them with that passage of time through the Sailor Moon verse things start to get magical.

Start with the great war in the Silver Millennium, and ending with Crystal Tokyo

It is important that everyone consider the above.

The Bringer of War who brought conflict between the earth and the moon. The Bringer of Peace who sacrificed herself to give everyone a second chance. The Winged Messenger in the form of a cat, sent to awaken her princess. The senshi as great friends, the Bringers of Jollity into an otherwise duty-dedicated existence. Time, as always, is the Bringer of Old Age that ushers in a long spell of quietude. In the distant future, the Magician uses her crystal to save the earth once more, and begin a new kingdom. Finally, the cycle begins all over again with her daughter the princess, a process that can only be described as Mystic.

I love it.

the 4th movement is a lot bolder right from the get-go as opposed to the previous 3, which each have like a minute of buildup. It’s also an entirely different style from the others- it sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place in an old style Old West movie. … hmmm… makoto as a wild west cowpoke….

I love the Jupiter one because it’s so out of nowhere. Not only within the symphony, but within the movement itself there’s just a random beautiful graceful passage amidst all the energy. It’s so much more than a one-dimensional piece; it moves into different styles and different moods and no one presentation can truly define it absent of the others.

I REALLY LIKE THE PLANETS SUITE IS WHAT I AM SAYING

(I’ve played that slow middle section of Jupiter several times in high school. It made me cry every time; not because of its emotional weight, but because of the exertion on the high notes. My technique has improved since then.)

“Mars: Bringer of War” “Venus: Bringer of Peace” can u feel the reinako

I do love how perfectly they complement each other. A match made in the heavens, as it were.

But, for real, under what circumstances would Venus ever be considered a “bringer of peace”? The goddess, if I recall, literally started wars over jealousy and vanity. The senshi I would describe more as “Bringer of Puns, Inappropriate Remarks, and General Chaos.”

But I digress. I love the way these two work with each other, musicwise and galpalwise.
