you know that bit in jupiter around 1:40 in, where all the horns and strings just go fucking majestic? every time i hear that i think of like. the scene from a western movie where the hero is first walking into a booming gold rush town, seeing all the people at work. Or a panorama of snowy mountains, with a parting shot at civilization way off in the distance as the wagon train departs for the frontier. New beginnings the open road, the great open sky, its all compressed there. Music is awesome.

I love this description! I spend a lot of time thinking about how weird music is… like, certain vibrations of sound emanating from air passing through valves of various sizes can make me cry or feel happy or imagine entire landscapes and narratives in my head. I would love to see a Fantasia-type thing done with just The Planets because as you’ve just explained, music can lend itself to such specific imagery.

Alternately: Hour-long AMV

I love The Planets! Neptune is my favorite piece of classical music, ever.

Isn’t it the most gorgeous things to ever be subject to human perception?

You can almost see the rose petals and the soft focus filter.

the senshi as described by their piece in Holst’s The Planets Suite

Mars: Complex, compelling, and actively tries to make life difficult for everyone

Venus: Priorities include being the prettiest; often features solo work

Mercury: Moves too fast for everyone, but doesn’t expect them to be able to keep up

Jupiter: An eclectic mass of joy, elegance, grandiosity, bittersweetness, and adorable tendency

Saturn: Constantly straddles that delicate line between pleasant and creepy

Uranus: Tries very hard to be mysterious and commanding but cannot hide the goofy dorkiness that lies within

Neptune: Presence is literally accompanied by a choir of heavenly angels

Pluto: What’s a Pluto

you should take a listen through the Sailor Moon R Symphonic Poem CD. Sailor Moon music motifs and themes meeting classical orchestral music. I practically collapsed when I discovered it. I recommend that you listen to ones on the Sailor Music site because the ones on youtube are strangely higher pitched than normal.

I can’t thank you enough for pointing me in this direction! These are not only great homages to Sailor Moon, they’re just nice-sounding pieces of music in general. If there’s one thing I love, it’s casually crying over slow brass renditions of my favorite songs. MOON REVENGE, HOW DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS TO ME.

(If you love symphonic renditions of anime themes, or even on the off-chance that you don’t, check it out here!

Guess who is going to be playing Holst’s The Planets next semester? ME

Guess who is going to needlessly relate it to Sailor Moon? ALSO ME

If you ever have an hour to kill, listen to The Planets suite and talk to me about its relationship to the Sailor Mooniverse. I am listening and I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about celestial bodies and orchestral music and soldiers of justice.
