About the “I don’t wanna hear it.” I watched this episode that had a slightly different translation which was “I don’t mind.” Sounds a little less “jerky” ? I think PGSM may have chosen to portray Mamoru like this for either the mini-subplot with Hina or for his role later in the series.

That translation really does change the entire tone of the scene! If his being a dick is used to accentuate or contrast his character development later on, it won’t stop me from judging him now, but maybe I’ll judge a little less in retrospect!

Ironically, I like PGSM for attempting to do the anime’s take on “jerky” Mamoru in a more plausible lowkey way, probably what the old show INTENDED him to come off as, but yeah I’m already sick of it. It’s weird how Ami and Mamoru seem like direct growths from the anime, while Usagi Makoto and Rei feel more like their manga counterparts.

It’s true, his anime persona was cartoonishly jerky. (No pun intended.) I have given (perhaps too much) thought as to why Mamoru sort of bothers me in this version, and I think I can distill it to this one moment:

Mamoru, I know you have a deep troubled mind, a restless past reincarnation stirring inside you, and the best intentions, but HOW IS IT PHYSICALLY POSSIBLE TO SAY A MEAN WORD TO AMI MIZUNO. I CAN’T EVEN BE TOO MAD, I’M JUST IMPRESSED.

There is a version of PGSM that if we put together all the little tidbits fans write like Ami making swords from her tears and Minako doing something I shan’t spoil… it would be such an amazing show!

PGSM: Abridged. Get on it, PGSM fans!

IT WAS NEVER THE POWER OF BELIEVING IN FRIENDSHIP

IT WAS THE STRENGTH OF THEIR OBNOXIOUSNESS THAT TRULY SAVED THE DAY

welp… it’s just you, me, the dripping stalactites, and 3 of our friends now

Once again, the heroic Tuxedo Mask appears on the scene to hold a brief cryptic exchange with the antagonists and ultimately contribute nothing.

*massive yawn* “OKAY. TIRED OF THIS PLOTLINE. LET’S DEFEAT THIS GUY AND DO SOMETHING ELSE.”

Kunzite probably spent hours on this comeback. He probably said to himself, “It’ll look super clever if I put my hand on my hip on that last line.” He probably hoped another Senshi would intrude just so he would get the chance to say it. He probably rehearsed it in the mirror.
