I have a working theory that it’s for intimidation. You know, like how if you come across a bear or a mountain lion, you’re supposed to make yourself look bigger to ward them off. It’s like that, but for people. People in general. Scare them off at dinner parties. Avoid confrontation at the market. That sort of thing.
