Random Unfounded Speculation I Just Came Up With (somebody could’ve already come up with it as well, I dunno)

Rue was meant to be Princess Tutu by the story. She loved Mythos as well, she’s the one who confesses during the climatic final fight (and is then basically killed by the raven), she has Magical Girl Powers of her own, and given her backstory she’s a perfect example of ~*DDD’s Drama*~. She’s also set against Fakir early on, she could totally be convinced to act against his No-Heart-Mythos plan. And she knows the fate of Tutu from the get go. She’s basically a ball of conflict ready to go off at any time.

But DDD thought that the story was moving along too slowly, it was too boring, so he just threw this random duck into the story and the rest is history.

DDD ruined his own tragedy.

I really like the idea that Ahiru was never forced into the role of Princess Tutu; she just naturally wants to help people and make them happy. So, while Rue had all the set-up and backstory to push her into the role of Princess Tutu, she didn’t have the same goals in mind. And this neatly fits into the theme of the whole series: the circumstances you find yourself in don’t define who you are.
